Darkness was just falling when the boats engine failed on their first trip out in the vessel they had attempted to row ashore an impossible task with the strong spring tide. Port Talbot Lifeboat was lunched and the vessel was soon taken in tow to the river Afan to be met by the coastguard team.
The vessel did not have any flares or radio aboard and only two life jackets between them. While conditions were clam and the crew's intentions were to test the vessel we cannot emphasize enough how important it is to carrying emergency equipment. He was visiting Port Talbot with his friends and their family when they decided to go for a walk along the seafront, the conditions were very rough and while walking on the pier he was washed on to the east side of the pier. One of the adults in the party managed to enter the water and recover the boy while Police, Coastguards and Port Talbot's lifeboat was on route to the scene. Paramedics were called but the adults refused to let them take the child to hospital so a medic was called to give the child a check up on scene.
Port Talbot Coastguard wishes to warn both children and parents that this pier is very dangerous in any seas which can crash over with no warning. The young boy was very lucky he was not washed on to the west side where his chances of survival would have been very slim.
