INCIDENTS FOR 2005
| Jan 10th | First call out for 2005 to a navigation buoy washed up from Lowestoft on to Aberavon Beach. |
| Jan 16th | MFV while entering the river Afan was hit by two big waves on her stern forcing her dangerously towards the north pier this was observed ashore by a local fishermen who describe it "she was travelling so fast we wasn't sure what it was" one of the Port Talbot team who also seen what happened from the station said "the vessel was being pushed along at a rate close to 20 knots the skipper did a fantastic job of keeping her under control" The skipper of the vessel seeing she was heading ashore dropped her anchor only for it to become wrapped around the prop. At this stage they were unable to do anything than to abandon the vessel when they were close to the beach. It is feared the vessel was holed and there was damage to the engine but it is hoped she can be repaired and towed off later this week. Thankful the crew all got ashore safe and the Port Talbot team after helping with lighting until high water returned to station. |
Feb 12th . |
Crew tasked following a request by the Police to search for a missing 17 year old who was in a distressed condition. An intensive search was carried out of the river Afan and dock area by both Coastguard and ABP security search terminated after it was reported the person had contacted home to say he was safe and was travelling out of the town. We would also like to thank the bailiff for the docks area who had called us to an object in the water, which in the setting sun was hard to make out at first but turned out to be a sleeping duck bobbing about on the water. While we all had a chuckle at this he did the right thing he was very observant to notice it from his vantage point. |

Coastguard teams from Loughor, Mumbles and Port Talbot began a shoreline search. Mumbles RNLI all weather lifeboat was requested to launch and the rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor was scrambled.
