22/05/2000 People who come to Aberavon Beach to jetski are being encouraged to register their craft beforehand. Neath Port Talbot Council are ensuring that visitors to Aberavon Beach this summer can swim in safety. John Powell, Head of Leisure, says that the number of jetskis using the beach has increased dramatically over the last few years. "It must be recognized that a large proportion of jetski owners and users are responsible people with only a few causing problems,"
he said. Currently, a voluntary agreement on jetskiing is in operation in conjunction with the South Wales Jetski Club, South Wales Police, the Aberavon Voluntary Lifeguard Club, Aberavon Surf Club, the RNLI and the Coastguard. All members of the jetski club are registered and have proper insurance cover.
But the council wants those jetskiers who are not club members to register their power craft prior to being allowed onto the beach.

This means that no jetski will gain access to the beach without identification and a valid insurance policy. Mr. Powell added, "The voluntary agreement has worked successfully for the last two years and we want to make sure that this continues. Safety for swimmers at Aberavon Beach is top priority for the council and this new scheme will reinforce our commitment to achieve this." The new scheme will be introduced next Saturday (27th May) in time for the bank holiday weekend. An agreement has been reached with Swansea Council which will allow registered craft to launch at Aberavon or Swansea and that information about misuse will be shared as a way of preventing irresponsible people from jetsking in the waters of Swansea Bay.copy right PTBC
